SCRIPT: (Locator: Jefferson, Texas)Kathy Patrick put herself through college styling hair… Kathy Patrick: “Does it feel good?” …so when she was laid off from her career with a book publisher, she combined the two things she loves. Beauty and the Book is officially billed as the only beauty salon and bookstore in the world. Kathy Patrick: “Where tiaras are mandatory and reading good books is a rule!” Tiaras, because... Kathy Patrick: “We all deserve to wear the crown, and who better than a beauty professional to tell you that beauty comes from within?” And books...because she says they illuminate a life. Kathy Patrick: “By being a reader, you have a more beautiful life and you are more understanding of other people.” Her shop is home office of Kathy’s Pulpwood Queens Book Club, which has 240 chapters all over the United States…all inspired by Kathy’s own book about how she says her life was saved through the spirituality of reading. Kathy Patrick: “We are not your mother’s book club. We did not want to be pretentious. Sharing each others’ stories and stories of others is what makes us human.” Kathy Patrick: “I bet you have some amazing stories.” Kathy started a life writing class at Newgate United Methodist Mission in Longview, Texas. Kathy Patrick: “I think people can find themselves by reading. They can find themselves by writing, too.” Philip Boepple, Writing Group Member, Newgate United Methodist Mission: “Writing out my life and what happened, it’s seeing myself in a psychological mirror.” Kathy Patrick: “When you start writing it down, all that empty space that might be inside of you gets filled up.” In Kathy’s world, a good story is like a good makeover. And both are powerful things. Kathy Patrick: “So when people leave my shop, I hope they have a bigger smile on their face than when they came in. And I hope they have a book under their arm.” TAG: Kathy travels the country talking to book club chapters and doing “big hair makeovers.” You can contact Kathy and check out her blog through her Web site.
