In less than 24 hours, United Methodists in Louisiana can build hope and a better way for people in need. It’s called the ramp ministry. A team of volunteers gets together to use their skills and craftsmanship to create walkways for neighbors whose mobility is limited. The effort also builds relationships. |

As a major-league baseball umpire, Al Smith shared the diamond with legends like Mickey Mantle. But decades after the last big play, calling the shots has become a challenge. Knee surgery left him struggling just to walk down the stairs.
These men are no minor-leaguers. Members of Shreveport’s North Highlands United Methodist church are making Smith’s life a little easier with the ramp ministry.
About a dozen volunteers travel across Louisiana, building wheelchair ramps for minimal or no cost. They’ve built 25 in three years.
Smith rose to the top of his profession, calling the World Series 40 years ago. But all he has left now are those memories.
Guy Moore / Church Member: “They had no retirement program whatsoever. So we're covering all the expenses on this particular one.”
The builders come from all walks of life, from a retired police chief to a dump truck driver. The oldest is 80. The youngest is 12.
Matthew Light / Youngest Ramp Builder: “I have fun out here because I get to spend a little time with my grandfather.”
The ramp is more than a physical pathway. It is also a bridge to relationships.
Kenneth Sanders / Church Member: “Trying to help out folks that need it—only reason I come out here for it.”
Al Smith: “I could never say enough good words. It just astounds me what they did. And it’s going to be a godsend.”
No errors on this play. This former umpire is now safe at home.
