With cold weather approaching, many of us are heading to the closet in search of warm blankets-thick comforters.  But for those living on the street, keeping warm is a constant struggle.  At Atlanta’s Cascade United Methodist Church, there’s a special sewing circle devoted to helping the homeless get a good night’s sleep.

SCRIPT:

There’s no place like home unless “home” is on the street.  It’s a harsh environment with few creature comforts.

Gwendolyn Trammell:  “I just think about how I would feel living on the street.  And the one thing that I would want is to be warm.”

To help Atlanta’s homeless fend off the cold, volunteers from Cascade United Methodist Church spend Saturdays sewing.

Gwendolyn Trammell:  “These are perfect because they’re not real heavy but they’re very warm.”

They stitch comforters together to create warm, sleeping-bag cocoons.

Gwendolyn Trammell:  “It’s a bed.”

Donated neckties are color-coordinated and sewn into the bed rolls to make them easier to carry.

Christine Brown: “It’s that personal touch that you give and that would help somebody, let them know that we care about them.”

Twice a year, the group hand-delivers the sleeping bags to those living on the street.  They are shelter from the storm.

Rachel King: “When you don’t have that harsh wind blowing over you at night,  I hope it gives them a good feeling that somebody cares.”

Working hard on the weekends, these women have turned more than a 100 comforters into cradles of hope.

Gwendolyn Trammell:  “And we may not make a difference in everybody’s life, but if we can make a difference in just a few people’s lives, that will be more than worth it.”
