As the war in Iraq continues, many are left wondering what they can do as individuals to work for peace.  Some people around the world plan to set aside September 21st,  which is the 23rd annual International Day of Peace, when the United Nations is calling for a global ceasefire.  Millions will mark the event in a very personal, and prayerful, way.  Lindsay Ferrier reports.

Natsound (prayer): “Help us Lord, to be more like you Lord…”

Amid reports of terrorism, war, death tolls and violence, these United Methodist women are coming together today to pray for global healing and global peace.

Debra Sullivan / United Methodist Women:  Prayer changes things and it makes a difference, and God answers prayer and I’ve witnessed that in my own life.”

Natsound (prayer): “We ask you to change things Lord, to bring peace Lord, into every heart…”

Debra and her friends aren’t alone.  On September 21st, millions around the world are joining in prayer for the United Nations-approved International Day of Peace.  At a time of religious and political separation, this simple act is uniting believers.

Becky Waldrop / United Methodist Women:  “Where people believe in God and where they are really acting on their faith, in many respects their religious beliefs, whether Moslem or Christian, help to bring them together in prayer.”

From a church classroom to a Nashville mosque, the sentiment is the same.

Imam Abdul Mohamed:  “We’re praying for peace.  And this is a human requirement of living – that they live in peace.”

The United Nations expects more than one billion people worldwide to get involved.

Imam Mohamed: “God listens and He hears.  And I believe if you ask God sincerely from your heart, He will answer.”

Debra Sullivan:  “If people will just seek him and love on him and ask him to change things, maybe we’ll see a move and a change in this country and all the nations.”

Natsound:  “Amen!”
