“I’ve got a regular route I use all the time now.”
Champ Goldy became a “running reverend” twenty-one years ago, at the
tender age of sixty-nine.
Champ Goldy, Senior Olympian: “I got this little brochure in the mail…
and this was the second year for the Senior Olympics, I think it was… I
said 'Hey, I can do that stuff!' And, for goodness sakes, I’ve been
doing it ever since.”
A couple of running events would be plenty for the average
ninety-year-old. Champ Goldy is not average.
Champ Goldy, Senior Olympian: “Ten o’clock in the morning, you’d run the
100-meter and there’s nothing until two or three in the afternoon when I
could run the 200. So I thought, heck, I may as well try this stuff.”
Champ added the javelin throw…and his personal favorite, the discus.
Champ Goldy, Senior Olympian: “The discus, now that’s real fun, I like
that. I can do, I think, 68 to 70 feet on that one.”
An active retirement? Not really. Goldy still works as a part-time
minister at Haddonfield United Methodist Church in southern New Jersey
where he preaches fitness at any age and hopes to continue to inspire
others for many years to come.
Champ Goldy, Senior Olympian: “The Good Lord made us not to be sitting
around too much. My goal is to run the 100 meters when I’m a hundred.
Okay? I’d like to do that.”

Champ competed as a sprinter in the 2005 World Masters Games in Canada
and will go to the Senior Olympics in Louisville in July. He also plans
to run in the 2009 World Masters Games, in Sydney, Australia…when he’s
92.
He’s currently the minister of visitation for
Haddonfield United Methodist Church
in New Jersey.
