SCRIPT: As a United Methodist missionary, it was Ken Corson’s job to spread the word. Ken Corson / SIFAT Founder: “We want to change the world. We want to make it better.” But the hunger and disease he saw in South America convinced him of a greater need. Ken Corson: “ And so we thought more ought to be done to solve some of these problems.” To bring education and improvements to Third World villages, Corson created “Servants in Faith and Technology”- a hands-on training center in rural Alabama. Natsound (Demonstration): “Today, we’re going to be talking about aquaculture…” Church scholarships help community leaders from around the world live here for months…. Nastound (Cement demonstration): “You’ll need sand…”Learning hands-on skills they can use at home…Natsound (Frances translates/demonstrates): “And you put 4 teaspoons of sugar…” …Like this oral rehydration mixture, that can strengthen malnourished children.Frances Watts / 17 yrs. old: “I’ve learned that 35,000 children die everyday. And SIFAT has just taught us the simplest appropriate technologies that we can bring out to the world to help save some of those lives.” Natsound (Demonstration): “Utilize everything around you, to be efficient in everything you do…" Students learn how to build super-efficient stoves…. Natsound (Augustus demonstrates): “And the smoke will not be too much…” …And these PCV water pumps - simple technologies that require no electricity. Leonardo Escalate / Social Worker, Guatemala: “This will really help people in my community because they don’t have water now.” Natsound (Demonstration): “And this is one of the things one can make and makes his work easier…” Helping people help themselves. It’s a strategy that works…using the simplest of tools. Frances Watts: “We can’t save the whole world, but we can learn these things so that they can change their communities, change their countries, change the world.” TAG: SIFAT has trained community leaders from 76 countries. Since then, better housing, schools and health clinics have become a part of impoverished communities around the world. For more information contact SIFAT at: www.sifat.org.
