If churches have a devil of a time getting kids to come worship on Sundays, what could bring them back on Monday night?
Zachary Palmer/13-years-old: “It’s a great game. Everybody loves to play the game.”
Pokemon and YuGiOh may have ignited a card craze for kids. But at Wesley Memorial United Methodist Church, AngelFire is king.
David Collinsworth/Youth Pastor, Wesley Memorial United Methodist Church: “The theme of the game is teaching a kid that there is a division line between good and evil.”
Youth pastor David Collinsworth created AngelFire along with the kids in this low-income neighborhood of Lakeland, Florida.
Shantirria Thomas/11-years-old: “Sometimes the good angels win. Sometimes the bad angels win.”
With the roll of the dice, the battle begins. Every character on a card has special powers and fights in the army of good angel, Gabriel, or that of the evil Lucifer.
David Collinsworth: “We built a game where the smallest, weakest card can beat the strongest card. The way the game is played is everybody has a chance to win.”
In AngelFire, Zachary finds something he is good at…and a safe refuge.
Palmer: “Sometimes my friends used to get in trouble, but I don’t have the bad friends. All my friends mostly come to this church.”
Collinsworth: “The game is a positive reinforcement, it gives them a chance to be the best at something.”
