(Locator: Cabot, Arkansas)
(cheering sound)
A day on the basketball court will help save the lives of children
thousands of miles away.
(player makes basket) Yes!
Youth from Cabot United Methodist Church in Arkansas worked for weeks
organizing a three-on-three tournament. They raised several thousands of
dollars for the Nothing but Nets campaign, which buys bed nets to
fight malaria.
Allison Grigsby/17-year-old: “You’re going to get to play in the
tournament. But you’re going to get to save a life. I just thought that
was really interesting and it was important.”
(Basketball action) “Good shot!”
Every 10 dollars sends a mosquito net to Africa.
Faith Terry/17-year-old: “You could go to the movies for 10 dollars. You
could blow 10 dollars at Wal-Mart. But to donate 10 dollars to save
people from malaria over in Africa is a great deal.”
One church member overcame medical challenges of his own to fight
malaria. Travis Marcus is a heart transplant recipient.
Travis Marcus/16-year-old: “Feels good because I know I’m helping to
save a family instead of letting them die.”
Martha Taylor/Arkansas Conference, United Methodist Church: “We’ve got
youth as young as five or six years old, and they feel very strongly
that they’re doing something important. And they are.”
The tournament winners received medals…
(nat) “Good game. Awesome game.”
…but the real winners are children who may live longer because of
Nothing but Nets.
Jared Santiago/17-year-old: “It brings people from the community and
lets everybody, of all ages, know that we have problems on a national
level. But together, we can solve them.”
Denise Wilson/Youth Leader, Cabot United Methodist Church: “We actually
had labels that we had made that said, ‘I saved a life today, what did
you do?’”
TAG:
The kids from Cabot raised enough money to buy nets for about 400
families.
