SCRIPT: (Locator: Byron, California)Ashley Dicksa loves using her favorite recipes, tested over generations. Ashley Dicksa, Krockpot Brigade Volunteer: “Most of them come from my grandmother, or my husband’s grandparents, and my mom.” Now she uses them in meals for cancer patients and their families. Dicksa volunteers for a group called the Krockpot Brigade. Person opens door: “Hi.” Patty Pulley started getting visits from the Krockpotters when her husband was first diagnosed with cancer. He later died, leaving her to raise five grandchildren. Patty Pulley, Recipient: “It’s just like a Christmas gift. They come in and they give you the gift of caring.” People eating meal: “Good.” Members of Byron United Methodist Church in Byron, California organized the Krockpot Brigade and recruited more than 30 chefs who have prepared 1,500 feasts and counting. Sharon Bonney, Krockpot Brigade Volunteer: “What we try to do mostly is provide the meal the day the person goes to chemo or to radiation.” A weedy lot beside the church is now a garden to grow fresh vegetables. In the California sunshine, the harvest is plentiful. People pick produce: “Whoa. Yea.” The Krockpot Brigade is part of the church’s Kaleidoscope Ministry. Founded by a two-time cancer survivor, Kaleidoscope offers a wide variety of programs for those touched by cancer. Jan Page, Kaleidoscope Ministry Founder: “You’re diagnosed with cancer, it’s like a bomb going off in the living room. Everybody is touched by it.” Some of those served by the Krockpotters later join the group to help others. One is in hospice care. Sandra Baque, Krockpot Brigade Volunteer: “She said, 'This is absolutely the highlight of my week.'” The chefs say their menu includes much more than a good meal. Sandra Baque, Krockpot Brigade Volunteer: “We offer them hope. We offer them connection and friendship. And we do it with kindness and love.” TAG: In addition to the hot meals, the Kaleidoscope Ministry also provides gift bags full of thoughtful items for those undergoing cancer treatments.
