SCRIPT: It’s the crack of dawn at Aldersgate United Methodist Church in Durham, North Carolina. And there’s toil and trouble, as these men huddle over a cauldron of brew…make that stew. Cook: “My potatoes won’t smush.” They are making 550 quarts of Brunswick Stew. This southern concoction is the “meat and potatoes” of their annual fundraising. The money will help rebuild hurricane-ravaged communities. John Hall / Member, Aldersgate United Methodist Church: “It’s great to come out here and stir stew and swap stories, but at the same time to know that the money is going to help other folks.” Cook: “That possum we got up off the road, it gives it a good taste.” But this rigorous recipe calls for less extreme ingredients. George Carver / Member, Aldersgate United Methodist Church: “A lot of people I’ve known will use deer, squirrel, rabbit. We just use the beef and chicken.” That’s George Carver, the stew meister. As keeper of the recipe, he knows what makes the stew just right. George Carver / Member, Aldersgate United Methodist Church: “What’d I like is to see this stuff boil a little bit now. Get it rolling if you can.” Even the church pastor, Reverend Johnny Branch, lends a hand…or two…by helping squish nearly 60 gallons of tomatoes. The Reverend Johnny Branch / Pastor, Aldersgate United Methodist Church: “This puts a color to the stew. The stew is usually a reddish orange.” It’s nearly finished…and with a nod of his head, the stew meister proclaims this palatable potion ready for eatin’. The stew sells out quickly, often by the box-full. Customer: “Thank you, Johnny.” There is no licking the bowl…but, the camaraderie and projects funded with the profits make it worth it. TAG: It takes two full days to make the stew – one day of dicing and slicing the ingredients and another to cook the stew. The fundraiser collects over two thousand dollars for mission work.
