Many retirees spend their free time traveling around the country in motor homes, leaving behind family, friends and their church homes. One group has so much fun on the road they call themselves the “Merry Mobile Methodists.”

SCRIPT:

For most of the year, these road warriors leave behind their neighbors and their hometown churches, but not their faith.

Merry Mobile Methodist (wearing loud pants): “These I wear when I’m partying.”

They call themselves the Merry Mobile Methodists – members of a rolling congregation that get together twice a year. Fellowship and food are the main attraction.

For 16 years, these congregants have been singing and praying together.

Natsound: singing

A photo album documents the new members and is a reminder of those no longer here.

Renee Williams / Merry Mobile Methodist: “This man passed away this year.”

Their road ministry to each other comes in the form of competitive games.

Natsound (playing Putt-Putt golf): “Go in! Go in! Cheater, cheater!”

Between gatherings, folks stay in touch through a newsletter and e-mail.

Merry Mobile Methodist: “It’s good people, good people to be around.”

Merry Mobile Methodist: “We just love it. We’ve had such good times up here.”

And their travels lead them back together, somewhere down the road, to the next church family rendezvous.

Merry Mobile Methodist: “We’re a bunch of merry mobile Methodists.”

TAG:

The Merry Mobile Methodists meet again in October in Tyler, Texas, where it will be the height of rose season and again next April when the azaleas and dogwoods are blooming.  They use the same campground each time, and even chipped in to buy a piano to keep there, for accompaniment when they sing hymns.
