It’s tough to be a young person trying to stay in school or find a job. The Rev. Veronica Brown understands the challenges, and helps kids meet them every day. She’s part job counselor, recruiter, and therapist…and she’s made a big difference for the kids who call her “the Minister of Encouragement.”

SCRIPT:

The Rev. Veronica Brown (speaking at Job Corps orientation):  “What are your needs you need to get taken care of?”

United Methodist minister Veronica Brown preaches every day, but not from a pulpit.

The Rev. Veronica Brown: “You are not there to judge anybody for their lifestyle.”

As an admissions counselor for Job Corps, her flock includes teenagers seeking a second chance at an education and a better life.

The Rev. Veronica Brown / United Methodist minister:  “Do I feel like I make a greater difference out here than in the four walls of the church? We have a lot of pastors, preachers who are working within the walls.  We are in need of more people who are working outside of the walls.”

Wes Dowty / Former Job Corps student: “Just the way she spoke, and sometimes she would pull scriptures out of the Bible, you know, she would try and inspire you that way.”

Nineteen-year-old Wes Dowty dropped out of school at fourteen after his father died.  He mowed lawns and parked cars, but he has bigger dreams.

Wes Dowty: “I want to be in the Navy, and later on I want to try out for the Navy Seals.”

And with the help of Rev. Brown, he will soon leave for boot camp.

The Rev. Veronica Brown: “I’m so glad things are working out for you, sweetheart.”

All across the campus are successes stories.

Kate Okwesa / Job Corps nursing student: “She supports me, she encourages me, talks to me, sends me cards, prays for me.”

Nursing student Kate Okwesa says Rev. Brown treats her just like a daughter.  For orphaned Chandrea Miller, she is a surrogate parent.

Chandrea Miller / Job Corps nursing student:  “She made sure that we had everything and it was exciting to know that you do have a helping hand whenever you need it.”

The Rev. Veronica Brown: “How are things going?”

Student:  “Waiting on my GED test, I am going to be out here at the end of this month.”

Out into the world with a second chance, a diploma, and words of wisdom from the Minister of Encouragement.
