SCRIPT: (Locator: Gautier, Mississippi) By seven in the morning, the Pie Ladies of Gautier (PRONOUNCED: GO-SHAY), Mississippi are hard at work… Donna Reiter/Pie Lady, First United Methodist Church: “Come here! I’m always wiping her off!” …if “work” is what this is... Donna Reiter/Pie Lady, First United Methodist Church: “We should have to pay to come down here!” …making more pies to sell out of their kitchen at the First United Methodist Church. The pies and other recipes paid for everything in this kitchen and a lot of other things, for a lot of other people. Like that homeless man who wanted to move into a trailer… Beverly Seigrest/Pie Lady, First United Methodist Church: “He needed some deposits, electricity deposits, deposits on the trailer. I’m happy to give that young man a chance.” …and the women and children in this substance abuse shelter. The Pie Ladies help keep it going. Beverly Seigrest/Pie Lady, First United Methodist Church: “I guess if you wanted to know if there was a secret ingredient it would probably be love, because everything we do is for love.” Jean West/Pie Lady, First United Methodist Church: “It makes people feel good to know you cared enough to do it right.” Martha Peterson/Pie Lady, First United Methodist Church: “You put in a pinch of this and a pinch of that. There’s no cooking like Mama’s cooking.” Helen handles the money. Helen Lindsey/Pie Lady, First United Methodist Church: “They say I’m a good shopper. I take advantage of the sales.” She says they’ve raised 45-thousand dollars – a lot of money given their prices. Helen Lindsey/Pie Lady, First United Methodist Church: “We charge $5.50 for the fresh apple.(When was the last time you raised the price?) Never.” In twelve years, there’s only been one week the pie ladies didn’t get together – because of a hurricane. Donna Reiter/Pie Lady, First United Methodist Church: “I think we’re too dumb to stop.” A lot of years, a lot of dough, a lot of love. A recipe for life, in the pie ladies’ kitchen. Donna Reiter/Pie Lady, First United Methodist Church: “That’s what we’re all about – good works and good pies. You can’t beat that!” TAG: The “Pie Ladies” also make casseroles, bread, and lasagna. When they’re finished with that, they sit down for a good game of Bible Trivia and Scrabble.
