SCRIPT: Volunteer: “This room is sizes 4 to 10….” At Kate’s Closet, shoppers receive personalized attention. Volunteer “And what size do you think you are?” This chic Alabama boutique caters to just a select few. Kim Bullard / Founder, Kate’s Closet: “We don’t see anyone but these ladies coming out of prison.” Kim with inmate: “So you need some office wear…” To give these newly-released inmates a fresh look, volunteers from St. James United Methodist Church outfit them in the latest styles and colors – free of charge. Donnetta Sanchez / Former Inmate: “This is like a dream come true.” For women used to wearing prison orange, these upscale garments are overwhelming. Donnetta Sanchez (crying): “I’ve dressed but I’ve never had nothing like this. This is beautiful.” Volunteer: “Let’s play Cinderella and see if the shoe fits.” Each woman can choose six “nearly new” outfits, from racks of donated clothing and accessories. Church members help to maximize their new look. Donnetta Sanchez: “And they’re preparing you for walking out into society because I plan on getting an office job and I have enough clothes to start me off.” Kim prays with group: “I thank you for each and every woman who walks in this door…” Helen Herring / Former Inmate: “What I really pick up here is the love and the joy and the happiness and that’s something I want to take with me when I leave and go home.” The inmates leave Kate’s Closet clothed with hope, proof that caring never goes out of style.Kim “That’s really what it’s all about. We just want to love on them.” TAG: Clothes and accessories are donated by St. James United Methodist church members and area businesses. Opened in 2002, Kate’s Closet has served more than 100 inmates. More information on the church can be found at http://www.sjlife.com.
