The impact of September 11th is immeasurable a year later. The layers will continue to be revealed in coming years. We went to school with some children in the heartland, in Tennessee, to see how they view what happened in New York, and what it made them feel.

Teacher: “Our assignment for today is to think back, if you can, to the events that happened on September 11th, and we’re going to be drawing how we felt.”

Queetesa House, 9-year-old: “I drew some buildings catching on fire …”

Denise Jones, 9-year-old: “And people jumping out the windows.”

Queetesa House: “And then I drew, ‘God, we love you...’”

Denise Jones: “She’s saying, ‘Help,’ ‘cause she was scared.”

Queetesa House: “… and God is good.”

Jonathan Brewster, 10-year-old: “I was at school, and then our teacher told us the news about the plane when it crashed into the building, and I felt sad.”

Tinesha Holcmob, 10-year-old: “I thought that at first it was like a joke.”

Alexus Owens, 10-year-old: “And, like, as the days went by, I was just thinking, ‘What if it happens to my house?’”

Queetesa House: “And I think the devil was seeing they was going to blow up. And God was just holding his hands over the people to make sure they safe.”

Tinesha Holcmob: “God was in my heart and I was thanking him because it could have happened anywhere. It could happen where I was.”

Denise Jones: “It was a lot of innocent people that got killed.”

Tinesha Holcmob: “At first I thought I knew God, but then now that that happened, I think I know God more.”
