Music is traditionally a big part of Easter celebrations, but the sunrise service of one United Methodist Church in Colorado will offer a very different take on tradition. Members of the SonRise Signers will be using their hands, not their voices, to inspire the congregation.

Poetry in Motion –Story:

Nat Sound (Music): “All that I am …”

Signs of music are in the air.

Nat Sound (Music): “… to worship you. Shout to the Lord …”

The SonRise Sign Choir is busy preparing for the Easter Sunday service.

Nat Sound (Music): “… power and majesty, praise to the King …”

This is one of only a handful of choirs around the country that blend sign language and music, for both the deaf and hearing worlds.

Susan Plymell / United Methodist pastor: “People love to watch us. They’ll come up afterward and say, ‘Oh, that was so beautiful’ and ‘That was so meaningful for us.’”

United Methodist Pastor Susan Plymell started this unusual choir six years ago after she learned signing to better communicate with a deaf child in her church.

Susan Plymell: “It enhances what’s happening and so we just really feel close to the music and what’s being said. And I wanted the rest of the congregation to experience the beauty of that.”

The SonRise Signers also share their message with the public. Certified deaf interpreter Donna Roberts has led the group since the beginning.

Donna Roberts / SonRise Signers: “Everywhere we go, people just say how much that it’s touched them, how much it adds to the meaning of the words. Because you see them.”

Nat Sound (Music): “… to you.”
