We often hear about starving people in other countries, but statistics say nearly 35 million Americans go hungry each day, too. Some people have cooked up a plan to reduce that number. Small groups can host a “Great American Bake Sale” and the monies raised go to fund food programs in their area.

Thirteen-year-old Jessie Starner is spending her summer vacation showing how a good recipe makes all the difference.

Jessie Starner, Mount Tabor United Methodist Church: “I like to be helpful in every way I can.”

Jessie sells her cake and cookies through her United Methodist church bake sale. Some proceeds will help children who live just down the road.

David Lloyd, Harrisburg School District: “What we see here with most of our students is the lunch they get today will probably be the only meal they get until lunchtime tomorrow.”

Eighteen hundred children depend on this summer feeding program in Harrisburg. These daily meals replace the ones they count on during the school year. That makes Jessie’s efforts all the more important.

Jessie Starner: “It would be a great accomplishment if we sold everything, probably enough to help a lot of kids at least be fed for a day.”

Jessie’s church was among hundreds around the country participating in The “Great American Bake Sale,” raising funds and awareness of hunger.

Sue Mitchem, Pennsylvania Hunger Action Center: “Last year the Great American Bake Sale helped realized over a million dollars. This effort is so important and every small group can host a bake sale and a lot of children are helped.”

Agencies say the hunger problem is growing. Ten years ago, Harrisburg had 20 meal sites; today there are 36. With budget cuts and economic uncertainty, feeding programs depend on the dollars and cents from individuals. And that makes these desserts seem so much sweeter.

Sue Mitchem, Pennsylvania Hunger Action Center: “Every one of us is capable of ending hunger in the United States of America if we all work together.”
