The average American woman reportedly has 19 pairs of shoes, and the American man has about four. While those numbers may vary house to house, what is certain is that worldwide, millions do not have ANY footwear at all. An organization is dedicated to sharing shoes with the world. Heidi Robinson has the story.

SCRIPT:

(Locator: New Windsor, Maryland)

Greeter: “Good morning.”

Today is not about wearing your Sunday best…

Reba Wolfe: “Every kid loves going barefoot.”

Woman with shoes in a bag: “Two pair.”

…but about wearing less.

Pierce and Ian Wilhelm: “It’s Barefoot Sunday! It’s Barefoot Sunday!”

And giving more.

The Rev. Helen Armiger: “Good morning!’

Folks at Saint Paul’s United Methodist Church take off their shoes and take bold steps…

Woman in bare feet: “Don’t get my feet!”

…to put footwear on the 300 million people worldwide who have no shoes at all. The organization Soles4Souls gathers footwear for people on four continents.

The Rev. Helen Armiger, St. Paul's United Methodist Church: “The children have scars on their feet, they have cuts. And when our feet are naked it’s a matter of dignity, vulnerability, health issues.”

Here in New Windsor, Maryland, storage might be an issue, because this church gave almost 300 pairs.

Taking shoes at altar: “Thank you Maylin.”

Generous souls file forward …

Joanne Hillary: “There’s a couple more. I have one more. No, wait a minute. Let me take off these shoes!”

…to joyfully give, right down to the soles on their feet.

The Rev. Helen Armiger: “Go forth in peace.”

Some go forth… in socks.

Joanne Hillary, St. Paul's United Methodist Church: “If someone sees me and wonders why, I don’t care! Because hopefully, I’ve done something that will help someone, somewhere in our world. It’s liberating!”

TAG:

Not only did the St. Paul’s congregation collect shoes, they also collected money to help ship the shoes. Many United Methodist churches across the country participated in Barefoot Sunday.

Soles 4 Souls shares the donated shoes with orphanages and families in poverty worldwide. If you would like more information, you can either contact St. Paul’s United Methodist Church at 410-635-2442 or log on to the Soles4Souls Web site.
