SCRIPT: The business side of running the country’s third largest denomination can be pressured, at times even painful. But upstairs, away from all the noise… Noel Goh / Prayer Delegate: “We ask for this conference, this general conference that it would be water washed and spirit born.” Noel (no-EL) Goh (go) is in a place of peace. Tara Sutton / Detroit Delegate, Visiting Prayer Room: “I find it very peaceful and open and a place where God is. I feel the presence of God when I come here to the prayer room.” To cope with the stress, United Methodist delegates seek refuge in the prayer room. Goh is a delegate, too – a “prayer” delegate. He came all the way from Singapore – 36 hours by plane – because he knew God wanted him here. Noel Goh: “Seeing the amount of prayer that has been generated by people from all over the states coming here at different times with a heart for prayer, crying out to the Lord; that has been very inspiring.” Elaine Darrell / Visiting Prayer Room: “You walk in here and it’s so obvious that this is a place to be who God lets you be.” In one of several prayer stations, worries are written then smashed. Margie Burger / Prayer Delegate: “Father, as I look at this wall, there are so many that are hurting…” A wailing wall holds hundreds of prayer requests. Margie Burger: “Father, I lift Jennifer to you…” This is hands-on ministry, vital to Goh and his faith. Noel Goh: “Prayer is like a cry. Everyone cries, even from a little baby. Cry of need, cry of dependence on somebody bigger than us.” Goh and the 250 other prayer delegates volunteer their time to pray with people they’ve never met, and may never see again. But for a brief time they connected. With each other, and beyond. TAG: Goh is a Methodist minister in Singapore. He is currently on sabbatical.
