Most Americans surveyed say they’d rather get a root canal than give a speech in public! Yet some are willing to step up – in front of their entire church. Kim Riemland tells us about a special class, for them to “practice” what they preach.

Yet each person who passes this “final exam” in this class will be equipped to fill-in in the pulpit.

Kathryn Garnett, Lay Speaking Facilitator: “You can tell there’s quite a lot of butterflies, even though a lot of those people have spoken in their own churches and have certainly spoken in front of groups within their church. This is really the first time they’ve been on the spot like this.”

United Methodist Kathryn Garnett leads this advanced lay preaching course. Several times a year, a dozen or more new students take the class at this Seattle church.

Students have learned all aspects of preparing and presenting a sermon. It’s finally time to show what they’ve learned and get feedback to prepare them to step in for a vacationing or sick pastor. Most of all, they’ve learned this is a lot harder than it looks.

Dorothy Skane, Lay Speaking Student: “It’s a lot of emotion, a lot of work. Like we learned in this class, it takes one hour for every minute of your sermon.”

Kathryn Garnett, Lay Speaking Facilitator: “Well, one thing I know they’ll walk away with and that’s a very great appreciation for what their pastor goes through every week to put together a service of worship and an effective sermon.”

They may not be pastors, but thanks to this class, they’re ready to serve.

Kathryn Garnett, Lay Speaking Facilitator: “We are all ministers. It’s just that we have a few of them are ordained, but the rest of us are ministers, too.”
