Soon we’ll be stepping into the voting booth to decide who’ll be the next President of the United States. As we found out in the last election, every vote really does count.  Still, in the United States just over 50 percent of eligible voters participate in elections.  We found one candidate for office who’s determined to change that by setting an example for people his age … first-time voters.  Reed Galin reports.

Devin Mauney: “I’m Devin Mauney and I’m running for the school board.”

On November 2nd, 18-year-old Devin Mauney will vote for the first time.  And one of the ballots he’ll be casting is for himself.

Devin Mauney:  “I think the political process right now doesn’t recognize the importance of issues to young people.”

Devin is determined to change that…as one of 8 candidates running for 3 seats on the Tucson, Arizona school board.

Dayna Nesbit, Youth Minister:  “He just really feels that that is his way of making a difference and I think it’s great that he’s pursuing it.”

Dayna Nesbit is Devin’s youth minister at Christ Church United Methodist, where Devin says he first got a taste for politics.

Devin Mauney:  “I feel like the Methodist church provided an opportunity to grow up and serve on some committees and boards and learn how to do that.”

But this kind of politicking is a little more intense. There’s lots of knocking on doors…

“I’m Devin Mauney, I’m one of the candidates for your school board.”

Explaining his platform…

“I’m really focused on making sure the classes are small enough so each student can get individual attention.”

And asking for every vote he can get.

“I’d love it if you all could vote for me on Nov. 2nd.”

It’s a lot to fit in between school work and college applications. But Devin hopes to do more than win an office – he wants to get other teens motivated.

Devin Mauney:  “When you give young people the opportunity to have their issues voiced and you actually talk to them about things that effect them, all apathy is gone.”

Nesbit says Devin’s passion for politics is contagious.

Dayna Nesbit:  “He was really a source of inspiration for many kids to become involved.”

So whether he wins or not…Devin has already accomplished something.

“I have a lot of faith in you.”

TAG:

Devin is the first student to ever try for a school board seat in Tucson.  He says his faith has been very important in this campaign, especially getting him through some pretty tough days on the campaign trail where he says he’s worn out more than a few pairs of shoes.
