With schools across the country back in session, students are putting summer behind them and are moving forward. Kevin Breidt is one of these students. Three years ago, he was a candidate to be a high school dropout, seemingly destined for a life of crime. But thanks to a program offered by the Methodist Children’s Home of Waco, Texas, Kevin has turned his life around.

SCRIPT:

Kevin Breidt is heading down a path to success.

Kevin credits his accomplishments to this place—the Methodist Home Boys Ranch.

Kevin Breidt: “I feel like I’m on top of the world right now.”

Like all the boys here, Kevin came with a troubled past.

Kevin Breidt: “At the age of 11, I was breaking into houses, stealing cars, vandalizing property, shooting cars, fighting all the time and drinking alcohol.”

The Boys Ranch offers boys 12 to 18 one more chance to turn their lives around.

David Fleuriet / Boys Ranch Campus Life Director: “The bottom line is it’s up to the youngsters to whether or not they buy into the program and decide to make changes in their lives. All we are doing is giving them the opportunity to hopefully do that.”

Natsound / Classroom: “In essence, it’s who am I? Where am I? Why am I here?”

Life here includes spiritual guidance, a mentoring program, daily responsibilities, lessons in social skills and a typical school curriculum.

There’s also the opportunity to care for your own steer.

Kevin Breidt: “This place helped me a lot because it helped me realize what I was doing wrong and what I needed to work on, and then myself, because I made the decision to start doing what I was supposed to do.”

Kevin is taking advantage of his time here, and is thankful for the second chance he feels it represents, knowing he was heading in the wrong direction before.

TAG:

In the three years Kevin has been at the Methodist Home, he has gone from a below-average student to an honor roll student. Recently he was awarded the title of Top Hand. This award is rarely handed out and recognizes a boy for his exceptional ability to demonstrate responsibilities beyond what is expected.
