SCRIPT: It’s a fashion show… “Here come our first couple of models.” …to help those who can’t afford fancy clothes … or even a place to stay. Lisa Waugh, Love Thy Neighbor: “We began calling it ‘Love Thy Neighbor,’ out of the Matthew passage that says ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’” Teenagers from Centenary United Methodist Church in Winston-Salem, North Carolina traveled to San Francisco to help the homeless … and realized the need in their own community. Lisa Waugh, Love Thy Neighbor: “They’ve hit hard times. They’ve been laid off. They had so many kids that they had to stay home with the kids because they’re not old enough to send them to school.” The teens came up with something they could do … a fashion show that raises 10,000 dollars a year. The money goes into block parties that give meals and buy toiletries and clothes for others. Robert Wooten, Homeless: “It really touches my heart that young people care enough about people to try to help.” Lindsay Rothrock, Love Thy Neighbor: “We have developed relationships with them. A couple of them have actually joined our church now.” The program currently serves more than 200 people a month. Local residents say it’s inspiring to see how a simple idea has grown. Dana Hite, Winston-Salem Resident: “I think it’s phenomenal. I give credit to these young children to be thinking so deeply about the needs of people.” Lisa Waugh, Love Thy Neighbor: “It has been better
for me than it has for anyone we’ve ever served.” Anne Bennet Thomas, Love Thy Neighbor: “A lot of them have just hit one spot in the road that just takes, tears apart their whole life. And they’re just trying to slowly build it back.” TAG: The three young women who founded the program are considering future work for non-profits and service in the Peace Corps. You can find out more about the program by contacting Centenary United Methodist Church at 336- 724-6311. Also, see:
