When it comes to saving a police officer’s life, a bulletproof vest has become an important piece of equipment – even if that officer has four legs and a leash. As Kim Riemland reports, a group of children in Texas have made it their mission to protect those who serve.

He’s friendly. He’s faithful. And he wears a badge.  Today K-9 Chris is the guest of honor at Christ Church United Methodist near Houston, Texas.

Kasey Connor/Christ Church United Methodist: “It took a long time, but it’s really nice knowing that we made a difference.”

Fifth and sixth graders from the congregation spent nearly a year saving pennies to buy a bulletproof vest for this crime fighter.

Kasey Connor/Christ Church United Methodist: “The police work hard to keep us safe. And so we can help keep them safe by raising money for a vest for their dogs.”

Scott Roush/Sinton, Texas Police Dept.:  “What the kids did today will potentially, someday, save my dog’s life.  It’s so valuable, what they did.  It’s just extraordinary, actually.”

Officer Scott Roush depends on his four-legged partner to sniff out burglars and illegal drugs.  It’s dangerous work.

Howard Day/Trainer, Pennies to Protect Police Dogs:  “These canine partners can hear the heartbeat, the breathing of a suspect in the next room, where their human partner would never know that danger was literally right around the corner.”

The children raised 12-hundred dollars through car washes, bake sales and appeals.  A second bulletproof vest will go to K-9 officer Britta – who is the target of an organized drug ring.  Their generosity will wrap the shepherds in safety and support.

Boni Wallen/Christ Church United Methodist: “Fifth and sixth-graders, they tend to be kids who want things given to them.  And I think it’s awesome that they’re giving to other people instead of themselves.”

Scott Roush/Sinton, Texas Police Dept.:  “I just want to say thank you, from the bottom of my heart.”

“You’re welcome.”
